As a player, it is absolutely horrible to have nothing to work towards – aside from the few characters you can buy, everything is completely random. And very, very expensive, whether with money or in-game currency. This seems to be a phenomenon with Marvel games – it’s also what killed Spider-Man Unlimited for me. Way, way too random.

Also, I have to disagree that each character feels unique. They all look nice, but in gameplay, after giving it quite a lot of time in testing them out, it still felt like the characters just had their skins lumped on to about 3 or 4 different types of fighters. For example, Hulk, Juggernaut, Rhino, etc. all felt like I was playing the same character with just a different skin. The few types all seemed to have the same punching style, moves, etc. Perhaps Injustice doesn’t have as good of a financial model, but I have to say they do a very good job in making each character unique not only in their look, but also in their play style. Also, for having a very simple tap-or-swipe input, there are surprising layers of strategy to be found through tagging, timing, and other subtleties in Injustice. I wish Contest of Champions had taken a few more of the good things from Injustice – they’d likely still have this player singing their praises.

Marvel did/does allow for direct purchase of a specific character. 2* and 3* Deadpool were both available for purchase in game for $5 and $10 accordingly.
